You must be 15 years and 9 months to enroll in the classroom course. You do not need a permit to enroll.
The Registry of Motor Vehicles of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires that Drivers’ Education Course includes:
** Class and driving must be completed within two years to obtain a certificate from the RMV
The price schedule is as follows:
Students completing on the road and classroom- This includes behind the wheel instruction, observation, parent class and certificate fee:

Classroom
The classes are run accordingly with the RMV regulations. An RMV driver’s manual will be provided to students during class at no extra charge
If a class is missed, it is required to be made up before scheduling license test. We run one class session per month so making up missed classes is easy! ( If you miss the first class, it is the first class that needs to be made up)
Classes are broken up into half days (9am-12pm and 12:30pm-4pm) If you are going to be late, please arrive at 12:30 and if you have to leave early please leave at 12pm. Then you will only need to make up half a day.
Driving
Permits are valid for two years before they expire. Students will be eligiblefor their license after having their permit for six months. If a student would like to get their license after having permit for 6 months, they must begin scheduling their lessons as soon as they get their permit.
Students are required by RMV to complete 12 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours of Observation of other students behind the wheel. (Observation hours are free of charge)
- Per RMV guidelines, students should expect to take 5-6 months to complete their on the road lessons. (students should expect this to be longer if they have limited availability for driving) This means 2-3 lessons per month. We aim for this so that students have adequate time to practice their driving skills at home in between their lessons.
Appointments can be booked by texting Michele to schedule at 978-587-1131 (Typically the students will book appointments on their own so Mom/Dad have one less thing to worry about!)
** Students get picked up and dropped off at home. We ask that if a student does NOT live in Marblehead, they let Michele know when booking appointments (each time) so that we can schedule accordingly. We can also pick up and drop off at other locations, we just need a heads up!
Observation is not scheduled separately so we request that students please observe either before or after each appointment until they have completed the 6 required hours.
Each lesson students will practice safe driving skills as well as technical maneuvers such as parallel parking, three point turns and backing up straight along a curb. It is our goal to prepare students for license day!
The RMV also requires each student to drive a minimum of 40 hours with a parent at home.
Cancellation Policy
Any cancellation of a driving appointment must be given within 1 hour of the scheduled time. (yep, you heard us right, we only need 60 minutes!) If an appointment is scheduled for 10am or earlier notice needs to be given by 5pm the night before. Failure to give notice will result in a cancellation fee of $45 per hour. Payment for missed appointment must be made prior to booking a new lesson. If the instructor arrives at a student’s house and they are not prepared (i.e don’t have permit on hand) or if they do not come outside, the student will be charged for the hour.
License Day
In addition to booking test directly through RMV, students have the option to book their test through MHD Auto School. This is OPTIONAL (so we don't include it in prices above). We recommend that students complete all requirements of driver’s ed (including the parent class) one month prior to eligibility, as it takes about 3-4 weeks to get a test scheduled. Booking through MHD Auto directly is optional but often preferred as RMV typically has 6-8 week waiting list. If test is booked through MHD Auto School we will provide the necessary car and sponsor as well as scheduling test for student.
License appointments are tentative and the registry is subject to change dates on us. Once a student is submitted for a license test (we send our request 2 weeks prior to the date we would like) we cannot remove them. If a student has to cancel their license- there will be a $20 fee charged by our school. (This does no include fees the registry may charge as well)
License day fees:
MHD Auto School students: $125 due on license day
Non students: $150
License day fees are NOT included in our total program cost because taking a license test with MHD Auto School is optional, students may book on their own if they choose.
